Yes I admit it..I am a bookworm. So what of it.It started when I was very young. My mama would take me to TG&Y .. if she lost me,she knew where to find me.Sitting in the books reading.Even as a preschooler...I have always loved books.I have all of mine from when I was little still at my mama's house just begging me to come save them. And I will ... SPRING BREAK..I PROMISE !! :)
So...In Kindergarten we had a thing called Read N Tell and RIF *Reading Is Fundamental/Fun* It was a book a thon of sorts to encourage reading skills. This was my thing !! I am all for kids being read to and promoting reading at an early age.So Kindergarten finds me loving books. We would read our books and then when we went back to school we took the books with us and there were parents there that would filp through the books and ask us questions.I won first place every year...I have the ribbons and newspaper clippings to prove it.I remember my 2nd grade year I read 188 books!!
SO fast forward to April 2004.This is when I found out I was pregnant. We started buying books. We didn't know what sex of a baby we were having but we knew we needed books and a lot of them.So we started buying ... and buying ... and buying. We have a zillion of them.A lot of the Disney books like from the Drs office. We love these! They bring back memories for us as well.We started reading to E as soon as she was born and it has paid off.I watched a video from Christmas 2005 and she got some books from Santa on the couch and she ran right for those..forget all the toys. She went for the books.
We were pleased as punch to see her excitement and love of these paper wonders!!
When we learned that Pre K passed out Scholastic .. oh this was like Christmas to us!! I have placed many orders with them growing up *I always had it filled out before getting on the bus to go home* and just got our books today from the latest order I placed.
Where is this blog going ??? We just finished a read a thon at E's school. It was 19 days long! Her class alone read 2604 books total *keep in mind there were kids who's parents DID NOT read to them .. 6 to be exact*!! That is an awesome # of books for 4 and 5 year olds! We had 527 of those books !!! There was one other student that had more than us but I think we did exceptional considering I am playing single mom and the only one reading to E !! She would sit all day and read or be read to.
I feel so sorry for the parents and kids who don't spend this time together.20 mins a day is nothing to sit and relax with your little one and read them a story.Or have them tell you one by using the pictures from the book.It builds vocabulary and makes them think.I can't understand being TOO BUSY to read to your kid/kids.It makes me sad to see it going on all around me.
I can say I am raising a bookworm.E has always slept with the book we read her before she goes to sleep *never the same one over and over...she doesn't like one book over the other..that is a good thing because I don't know that I could stand to read the same one over and over*She doesn't sleep with dolls or animals..Just her book.Last night she went to bed and I went in to check on her..and didn't see her.Well I saw a light.Under the covers there she was with a flashlight and a Cinderella book reading to Pooh bear *her pillow*.How can you chastise her for that?
Moral of the story....READ TO YOUR KIDS!! IT ISN'T GOING TO KILL YOU !! I READ 527 IN ONLY 19 DAYS...WHAT IS 20 MINS OF YOUR TIME!!ONE DAY....THEY WILL BE GROWN AND GONE..YOU WON'T GET THAT TIME BACK!

Oh, how cute! I remember many times when my parents would catch me under the covers with a flashlight or under the bed reading books. They were my tv when I was growing up.
I'm glad E loves books so much!
Thanks for remembering RIF! We are still here and continue to help children discover the joy of reading.
For a second year, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and US Airways are working together to help children nationwide discover the joy of reading. Starting April, adults are invited to join the 2009 Read with Kids Challenge and help collectively log 5 million minutes spent reading with kids. You’ll have the chance of winning a family vacation to the Walt Disney World Resort and more great prizes. Get on board!
Visit www.RIF.org/readwithkids today.
You can also find a bookmark, flyer, web banners, and links to RIF’s social networking sites on the “Spread the Word” section of the Challenge website.
Hope this information is useful!
Geeks of the world UNITE! I'm right there with ya on the reading and spending the time with your children. Miss Ma'am's vocabulary is truly amazing for her young age of 7.
I say GOOD FOR YOU, MADAM!!! Turn E into a geek too. It will pay off for her in the long run anyway, just my honest opinion.
KUDOS!!!!!
